Some believe that DirecTV are deliberately sabotaging the DirecTiVo boxes to encourage users to switch to the new non-TiVo DirecTV HD PVR. This seems a little extreme to me and I'd prefer to believe it was a genuine technical glitch.
Okay, I don't have a lot of experience performing TiVo hacks, so don't expect step by step instructions here, but kennybain over at the TiVo Community Forum poses an interesting question: do you really need a Slingbox to watch TiVo recordings remotely?

Comcast and TiVo showed a working version of the TiVo software running on Comcast PVR at this years CES. The highly anticipated partnership announced over a year ago has many a Comcast cable subscriber excited at the prospect of getting some TiVo love on their current boxes.

A few days ago the Wall Street Journal had an article which raised a dilemma which many of us are facing. Should we settle for an inferior, often buggy, often hard to use HD PVR from our cable company or do we get down with a TiVo Series 3 PVR?

If you buy a Series3 TiVo by the end of January and activate it by March 2nd, you can transfer lifetime service from your existing TiVo for $199. This is an extension of a previous offer. But, if you've got a DirecTV TiVo unit, you're out of luck.
WeaKnees points out that TiVo's offering up a new round of rebates for Series2 units, replacing the rebates that expired on December 31st. You can also get $180 off of a dual-tuner Series2, which brings the price to $69. You have to activate your TiVo and sign up for at least a year of service.
